Five Classic Spanish Tapas You Should Try

Have you ever tried tapas? Tapas are small savoury dishes or finger foods often served as snacks with drinks, or with other tapas as a meal. They can be something as simple as tuna, cured meat or an omelet. Because tapas are informal, they are commonly eaten standing up at the bar or at small tables or even upturned barrels. Here are some classic Spanish tapas.

Gambas al Ajillo

Seafood is a large part of the typical Mediterranean diet, and prawns are no exception. This dish consists of fresh prawns in sizzling olive oil with garlic and chili peppers.

You know your bite-sized Spanish croquette is good when it’s soft inside but crispy outside. Made with a buttery flour mixture flavoured with stock rather than milk, it can come in a variety of versions, or a combination of fillings, from ham, shrimp, to cheese. Eat it while it’s hot!

Albóndigas en salsa

These little meatballs are made from ground meat, either pork or beef, and braised in salsa (sauce) rich with herbs. They are a staple on most tapas menus. These Spanish meatballs are sometimes served without the salsa, as a soup.

Patatas bravas

These are bite-sized potato chunks or wedges that are deep-fried, boiled, or sautéed, spiked with chili. They are sometimes cooked with tomatoes or garlic, and often served with aioli sauce.

Jamon serrano

This dry-cured Spanish ham has a complex flavour due to it’s long curing process which involves wind drying. The result is ruby-red, semi-translucent slivers of melt-in-your-mouth meat that is served without embellishment. Pick up a slice (or a cube) with your fingers, or with a piece of bread.
